The Problem We Are Solving

Electric vehicles need electric drives. Designing such electric drives is a challenging task. Considering software, E/E and mechanical engineering domains, a lot of critical decisions must be made about the design. Each decision affects customer objectives such as performance, energy efficiency, carbon footprint, package and cost. Such objectives are in conflict with each other, which makes it difficult to find the best solution for the customer.

During the design process, numerous design decisions regarding the subcomponents of electric machine, gearbox and power electronics must be made to optimally fit the customer requirements. Additionally, increasing competition in the automotive industry requires a short time-to-market and sophisticated product designs for commercial success. As such, designing electric drives appears as a delicate and complex problem.

Our Solution

Our solution to the complex design problem is OPED – a software that employs AI methods and autonomously searches for optimal system designs. The underlying algorithm covers power electronics, electric machine and gearbox of the electric drive. Moreover, their best-possible integration in the available vehicle space is optimized. The optimization is performed in a multi-objective manner, meaning all customer objectives are optimized concurrently.

Engineers and decision makers are then supported by a diverse set of optimal designs that guide the entire development process from the very beginning. This reduces development time significantly and increases quality as well as competitiveness.

Our Vision

Building on our strong powertrain expertise, our vision is to further expand the method to other products and industries. For that purpose, we are creating a generic product and process optimization software named OPx.

With OPx, any product/process model can be connected to our optimizers, which allow convenient scaling to entire computing clusters.
